3 takeaways from 3 start-up stories

Zappos - Founder CEO Tony Hsieh

  • Have a vision and start work around that.
  • Zappos decided what they wanted to stand for and took the bet to make the "Best customer service &  experience" their goal.
  • Empower stakeholders here "Employees" to make autonomous decisions holding customer experience as supreme.
Result: Ripple effect and word-of-mouth made Zappos a valuable brand with over $2 billion in yearly sales.

Instagram - Co-founder & CEO Kevin Systrom

  • Idea litmus test - Your idea is cool but can it scale? Can it change the world in an interesting way?
  • Believe in the power of the product don't spend a $ on advertising. Pivot and remove the unlikable features and relaunch if you have to with the star feature.
  •  Hire the world's best people. Keep the team small. Small is the new big!
Result: More than 100 million users in 2 years and eventually got acquired by Facebook for for $1 billion.

Reditt - Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian

  • Take a different path and pop the question to your idol you never know what the next moment holds for you. (These guys asked Paul Graham to listen to their pitch)
  • It won't be perfect if it is bare bones and functional - so launch! Fake it till you make it. Turn the ghost house by acting as the users.
  •  This is your last life and so play your best game. Make the most of it!!!
Result: The front page of web was out in 3-4 weeks. Power of expression is what distinguishes them from ROW.
